The MAN Smart HYBRID Experience system installed on the Gottsegen Hybrid 133 Expedition is a modular, integrated marine hybrid solution designed by MAN Engines. It pairs conventional diesel internal combustion engines with high-efficiency permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor/generator units and high-voltage energy storage banks.
System Architecture & Components
* Dual Combustion Engines: Twin marine diesel engines (MAN D-series) acting as the primary conventional power source, compliant with HVO/renewable fuels to cut carbon emissions.
* Electric Motor/Generator Units: Inline electric machines situated between the diesel engines and the shaft driveline, delivering electric propulsion and energy generation with up to 96% efficiency.
* Electromagnetic Clutches: Positioned between the diesel engines and electric units, allowing the combustion engines to be decoupled completely for pure electric driving or seamlessly engaged without interrupting torque output.
* Hybrid Energy Storage: High-voltage battery banks arrayed alongside the drivelines (>600 V) that provide DC power for electric propulsion and zero-emission hotel loads.
* Integrated Energy & Propulsion Control Systems: Displayed on central touchscreens, managing energy distribution, power flow, intermediate circuit voltages (500 V–750 V), and automatic speed synchronisation across drivelines.

Mode : Functional Description
Zero Emission | Powered exclusively by high-voltage batteries; virtually silent, zero-emission electric propulsion ideal for sensitive marine environments or harbour operations.
Boost Mode | Diesel engines and electric motors work simultaneously to maximize peak power density and acceleration.
Cross-Over / Diesel-Electric : One driveline runs on diesel while its electric motor generates power to drive the secondary shaft or charge batteries; or power is supplied by generator sets to reduce main engine wear. |
Diesel Mode Standard mechanical propulsion directly from combustion engines, with the electric motor acting optionally as an alternator to recharge the battery banks. |
Hotel Mode House loads (HVAC, lighting, electronics) are drawn directly from the battery bank while main engines are fully shut down.
